Koichi Ohshima is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pathology at the School of Medicine, Kurume University, Fukuoka, Japan. He received his medical degree in 1984 from the Kurume University School of Medicine in Fukuoka, Japan, and then completed an internship and residencies at the same hospital.

Professor Ohshima was Assistant in Pathology in Professor Dr Masahiro Kikuchi’s laboratory at the Fukuoka University School of Medicine, Fukuoka, Japan from 1986 to 1996; in 1993 he took up an appointment at Würzburg University, Würzburg, Germany, working in Professor Dr Hans Konrad Müller-Hermelink’s laboratory. He was appointed Assistant Professor in Pathology at the Fukuoka University School of Medicine in 1996, and took up his current positions at the Kurume University School of Medicine in 2005.

Professor Ohshima is a specialist in haematopathology, and he has a particular interest in HTLV-1 and EBV-associated lymphomas. He has published widely, with 335 original papers, 65 case reports, and 137 review articles and book contributions to his name, including a contribution to the 2008 update of the WHO Classification of Tumours of Haematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues.
