Stefano Pileri is Alma Mater Professor of Pathological Anatomy at the University of Bologna, Italy, and Director of the Haematopathology Unit at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, Italy. He earned his medical degree from the University of Bologna in 1976, and was trained in haematopathology at the University of Kiel in Germany in 1980 as certified by Professor Karl Lennert. Professor Pileri was appointed as Associate Professor of Pathological Anatomy at the University of Bologna in 1986 and Full Professor in 2001.
Professor Pileri has authorized approximately 10,000 diagnoses per year since 1980, with haematopathological biopsy material submitted from 85 different Italian centres. He has also worked on the development and validation of innovative techniques and reagents for haematopathology and oncology.
Professor Pileri has published widely and is author of 1,084 scientific reports (609 quoted in PubMed and one in press in international journals, with a total impact factor of 3,641.044). He was co-editor and co-author of the 4th edition of the WHO Classification of the Tumours of Haematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues and co-author of the 1994 Revised European–American Lymphoma Classification (REAL), and has served on the editorial boards of many journals including Leukemia, Blood, Haematologica, Human Pathology, Histopathology, and Virchow Archives. Professor Pileri is a regularly invited speaker at international meetings and is Past President of the European Association for Haematopathology (EAHP). Professor Pileri has received many awards, including an Honoris Causa in Medicine from Athens University in 2011 and the Malpighi d’Oro prize in 2012, and he was ranked 21st among the most important Italian scientists of the past century in the field of medicine (h-index: 102).
